BPC-157: sourcing and COA guide

BPC-157 is a synthetic pentadecapeptide derived from a partial sequence of human gastric juice protein. It is one of the most widely studied research peptides in preclinical models, which means the sourcing bar has to be high: laboratories comparing results across studies need consistent identity, purity, and batch-level Certificates of Analysis. This guide covers what to require of a supplier.

What BPC-157 is

BPC-157 (Body Protection Compound-157) is a 15-amino-acid peptide with the sequence GEPPPGKPADDAGLV. It is stable in gastric juice under laboratory conditions, and appears in the literature in both acetate and free-base salt forms. Because two salt forms circulate, a COA must state which form is in the vial — net peptide content differs between them and downstream reconstitution math depends on it.

Purity standards to require

  • HPLC purity ≥ 98% by reversed-phase HPLC, with the chromatogram included on the COA rather than a bare percentage.
  • Mass confirmation by ESI-MS or MALDI-TOF matching the expected monoisotopic mass of 1419.5 Da for the free peptide.
  • Peptide content / net peptide reported alongside gross fill weight — lyophilized vials contain counter-ions and residual solvents, so gross mass overstates active content.
  • Salt form disclosure (acetate vs. free base) and, where the study requires it, residual solvent and endotoxin results.

Batch-level COA requirements

Every production batch should carry its own Certificate of Analysis. A COA issued for a different lot, or a generic "typical results" spec sheet, is not a COA for the vials in hand. At minimum, a batch COA should include:

  • Batch or lot number matching the label on the vial.
  • Manufacturing date and expiration or retest date.
  • Analytical method identifiers (HPLC column, gradient, MS mode).
  • Signature or laboratory identifier for the analyst who released the batch.

Handling and reconstitution

BPC-157 ships as lyophilized powder. Handling is strictly in vitro: reconstitute with Reconstitution Solution or sterile water, store reconstituted material refrigerated and shielded from light, and follow your institution's SOPs for peptide handling.
